Near my house is the Monmouth County Mosquito Extermination Commission. Everyday on my way to school, I pass the dismal building and become curious about its purpose. I know that Monmouth County has a lot of mosquitoes in the summer, but what about in the middle of the winter? What were the owners of the thirty or so cars in the lot doing at work today?
Upon looking up the commission, I found that it aims to "provide County residents and visitors with protection from arthropod-borne diseases". They also offer a tick-testing service, which I assume checks to see if ticks plucked from people carry Lymes disease.
I guess it has a purpose, but it still seems pretty weird to me. I seriously want to know what the workers in the Commission do all winter. I assume there is much to do when it comes to controlling mosquitoes, but are there really enough ways to prevent an abundance of mosquitoes that the subject is discussable for 360 days a year? Either way, if people enjoy talking about mosquitoes, there's nothing wrong with working at the Monmouth County Mosquito Extermination Commission.
