As some of you know, I often use the word "wumbo". Many people have asked me what wumbo means, and are not pleased with my response. In this post, I will summarize what wumbo truly means.
The word wumbo was first used in the popular television show "Spongebob Squarepants" in a season three episode "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV". In the episode, Spongebob, who works in the Krusty Krab Restaurant, found the belt of one of his heroes, Mermaid Man. For those of you who don't know, Mermaid Man is a superhero in Bikini Bottom, and he wears a belt adorned with the letter "M". Even though he plans to return the belt, Spongebob need to try on the clothing of his hero. As Spongebob's colleague, Squidward walks into to back room to find Spongebob with the seemingly stolen belt on, Spongebob presses a button on the belt and causes Squidward to shrink to a small size.
In order to restore Squidward to his original size, Spongebob leaves work and looks for someone to help him make Squidward big again. He encounters his best friend, Patrick, who presents a logical solution to the problem. Patrick tells Spongebob that the "M" on the belt must stand for "Mini" and in order to make Squidward regular size again, Spongebob must flip the "M" to a "W" for wumbo. Spongebob, being pretty stupid if you ask me, responds to Patrick, "Patrick, I don't think wumbo is a real word." Patrick answers with the most beautiful words ever uttered by man (or starfish).
"Come on, you know! I wumbo, you wumbo, he, she, me, wumbo. Wumbo. Wumboing. Wilhem B. Wumbo. Wumborama. Wumbology. The study of wumbo! It's first grade, Spongebob!"
So, in conclusion, wumbo means the opposite of mini. To learn more, visit this site and watch the video below.
